Most of our research is focussed on mutation. We are interested in both the process by which mutations occur at the DNA level, and the effects those mutations have on fitness and phenotypes. We are currently investigating the degree to which the mutation rate varies at a local scale in the human genome and the effect that transposable elements have on gene expression profiles. We have also recently been developing methods to estimate the distribution of fitness effects and the proportion of substitutions that are advantageous.
