Training on TEM and Associated Equipment

 Courses Available:

TEM Use   ;   TEM Refresher Course for Individual Users

Optimal Imaging for a Specific Sample   ;   Gatan Camera

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)

For all enquiries, please contact Julian Thorpe (and tel. [87]7585)
I routinely train people on a one-to-one basis as and when the need arises for use of the various items of instrumentation, but have recently instigated some more formal training sessions for small groups (see below).
In regard to the TEM itself, you may also take a look at the instructions for use online, which you may find useful to read before you come for training and also afterwards to refresh your memory.
However, in regard to some of the newly-acquired  cryo gear, I have yet to be fully-trained myself! So, if you have a particular interest in this area I will try and arrange a training visit from the Suppliers at a mutually-convenient time. Please advise if you are interested in this specifically.

Use of TEM Training Sessions:    These take place at the microscope and all trainees have a chance for hands-on individual use of the TEM during the training session.

        Content:

Overview and description of the TEM and its research uses
Basic operation of the TEM
Routine alignment
Optimal imaging for user's specific sample requirements
Basic digital camera operation

TEM Use Refresher Course:    If you have had a training course but have not used the TEM for a while and feel a bit 'rusty', I can offer one-to-one refresher training as you look at your own sample.

Please just email to book up the TEM as usual and ask for 'refresher training' - I will then sit at the TEM with you for half-an-hour or so and help to re-acquaint you with the instrument.

Optimal Imaging for a Specific Sample:    If you have a particular sample that you are having difficulty with, please ask for my advice. I can then sit with you at the TEM to see whether I am able to optimise the conditions for that sample or give advice as to alternative preparative approaches.

Please just email to book up the TEM as usual and let me know your problem.

Gatan Ultrascan 1000 TEM Camera Training Sessions:

N.B. I can provide training in the use of the TEM camera as and when required.

Also, Neil Wilkinson (the Gatan rep) is happy to come down in the future to help  with any specific application procedures and deal with any problems.
